A Seal's Last Sight

"For years, I’ve dreamed of capturing this common hunting tactic of polar bears—as seen from the seal’s perspective. It took over three years to plan this picture, with many unsuccessful tries. Finally in the drift ice north of Svalbard, I found a seal breathing hole with nearby polar bear tracks. I drilled a hole, mounted a rig so that my underwater camera was under the breathing hole, attached a motion sensor, and waited eight hours. At 4 am, a polar bear approached. He stuck his head through the hole’s thin ice layer, blew his nose, and looked straight into the camera. Then he laid down and fell asleep. I waited nine more hours before he woke up and moved away to retrieve my camera with my dream picture!"
